I'll admit I know nothing and this was my first time in New York but despite those limitations I feel like I've been to the ultimate deli. Apparently it's been around since about 1914 and for a very packed little place, they have some fine quality food. Over 5 kinds of lox and sandwich combo's running the gamut in prices. Take your number, move to the back, figure out what you want and enjoy the experience. I went with the Russ Pastrami and had the really good Beet and Lemon Shrub as a drink. As far as I could tell, this was about as real as you can get.
The best bagels I have ever tried. The bun itself was super dense and hard in a positive way. Just realized there was another level of bagel idealism. The filling was heavenly. The sour cream, the cream cheese was magical. The smoked salmon was fresh and tasty. This the heaven for bagel lovers. After I had those bagels, I always compare the bagels I had afterwards with those perfect bagels. Had to queue for a long time though as I visited this shop on the Christmas Eve.
I HIGHLY recommend the pastrami lox. Their regular Nova lox is also to die for. They have great bialys. Their cream cheeses are so rich it’s incredible. Try the horseradish one. My mouth is watering just writing about it.
This place is a landmark in the city and should not be missed by anybody. I travel an hour from my house in NJ just to get their lox. You will not be disappointed.
Enjoy the pics, don’t drool too much.
Be aware that the store is very small and usually very crowded, especially around holidays. There is a number system and there are usually 60-100 people ahead of me when I go there. Customers frequently spill out into the street. I’ve been there with my young kids and it’s very stressful for them.
Love the history of this place. It's an NYC icon and I had yet to go until yesterday. The have a large variety of smoked fish. Mostly Salmon but also more unique varieties like tuna and such. Their bagels are good, albeit small. And they have some great cream cheeses (and vegan cream cheeses). I recommend the horseradish dill. Yum.
The system to order is old fashioned (take a number) but it works and they don't seem rushed, but the place is calm from the employees to the tourists there.
They sell baked goods and sweets as well, but I’m not crazy about that type of food so I have not had it. It looks very good though.
*DO NOT MISS THIS ONE* This is the alpha and the omega of smoked / cured fish. There is simply no better lox or herring in New York City.
If I worked here I would be 900 lbs. Everything looks so delicious.
We sought out this place because of Louis CK. The store is a lot smaller than it appears in the show but Louis wasn't joking how ridiculously tasty the food is here. Everything tasted really really good, almost heavenly. Their chocolate bread is one of the best things I've ever had anywhere.
Don't miss this if you're new to town
