Called after working hours on Friday , it was 4:16 PM already, and had no great expectations based on the previous reviews. For my surprise someone responded, listen patently while I was explaining my case (expedited issuing of a a personal ID card), and provided a great advise. Really helpful. Excellent job!

Need a black hole for you time - you found it! The Bulgarian Consulate is a place, where information, including communication, is one-way and travels in the wrong direction. Personnel is unfriendly (I won't call them rude, simply because their communication skills are absent), and for the most part leave you guessing as to how to navigate their nonsensical procedures and rules. If there is one recommendation I'd give, it is COMMUNICATION or a two-way flow of information in a verbal form - rule #1 in every public administration program.

The lady at the window was cordial and helpful. She helped me do what I needed to do, and the wait time was minimal.

In addition, the Consulate General is a great asset to the Bulgarian community in NYC. It hosts many evens and activities organized by Bulgarian ex-pats and groups.

Dear Bulgarian Consulate staff, you are a total public administration embarrassment (I am writing this in English in hope that you are able to understand it, since Bulgarian doesn't seem to do the job). Not only your website does not explain the "imaginary" rules of appointments, and your phone just lets the caller on a futile journey of listening to a half-asleep female voice monologue, but your very much alive representatives randomly apply rules of appointment calls vs. "I'll give you money to treat yourself with a coffee" briberies from non-scheduled show-ups. I suppose one has to put on a fez and adopt oriental mannerism to be successful in any endeavors of obtaining services at your public admission office. While people in New York are strong believers in communications and written rules in the interest of time, this sleepy little place is a piece of the Orient (in the bad sense) in the heart of the Big Apple. Enjoy at your own risk!

My expectations were not high but were surpassed. I definitely see improvement in service in the course of the last 10 years.
